I shut my eyes as the ocean swallows me whole.
Amora
Water floods my lungs, and I choke on the one thing I love the most.
The sea.
The waters of my kingdom.
They’ll be the death of me.
All The Stars And Teeth Synopsis
Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice.
She will reign.
As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer — the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.
When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.
But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder — and more peril — than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.
I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.
All the Stars and Teeth Review
Okay so this debut novel by Adalyn Grace has been on my TBR pile for at least half a year. Books involving magic, pirates, mermaids and ocean voyages? I was hooked as soon as I started reading it and already ordered the sequel (All the Tides of Fate). But I mean I’m always a sucker for a fantasy involving the ocean.
In the world of Visidia, the citizens are legally only allowed to practice a single type of magic. Each island in the country is designated for one type of magic. Once a citizen chooses a magic, they live on that designated island. Arida is where the King and Queen live. The rulers of Visidia are from the Montara blood line. The Montara’s are the only people who carry the Soul Magic. No one else is allowed to practice Soul Magic. Soul magic allows a person to read the intent and desires of your soul and gives the power to kill someone by destroying their soul. All that is needed is blood, bones, and fire to practice soul magic. But, Soul Magic has a price, and if you can’t control the beast of Soul Magic, it will consume you and destroy everything.
Amora is the Princess of Arida and the future High Animancer. Amora is getting ready to perform her magic in front of her kingdom to prove she can handle the soul magic inside her. She’s been preparing for this moment her whole life, everyone will be watching and waiting. If she can’t control the beast, she could be executed as it is too dangerous for an Montara who cannot control their soul magic to be permitted to live. Amora is one of two potential heirs, but she is the only one who wants to rule. She loves her kingdom, despite being sheltered on Arida her entire life.
Ferrick and Amora are engaged for political reasons, even though she feels nothing more than friendshipwith Ferrick, as are most politically arranged marriages. Ferrick is Suntosuan, he has “restoration” magic. He is one of the best healers, his mastering of restoration magic allows him to heal others and himself. He was paired with Amora to help her and provided the materials for her soul magic. Bastian is witty, handsome, and a fearless pirate. Bastian and Amora are thrust together as each other’s last hope to right many wrongs after her ceremony goes wrong. He opens her eyes to the reality of what Visidia is and pushes Amora to be better. Vataea. She is the last in this motley crew. She doesn’t appear until about halfway through the book, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t play a major role in this adventure. She’s so fierce and just is total bad ass.
Betrayal, love, friendship, family issues, lies, curses, magic, wit, sadness, personal growth all have roles in this book. These characters all are morally grey, each in it for themselves. The world building and event pacing are amazing and its definitely a MUST READ! I cannot wait for the sequel to arrive in the mail.
