The Red Button Synopsis
The prequel to A CHRISTMAS CAROL— A sweet Regency Christmas romance
Here at last is the untold story of Scrooge’s doomed engagement
Belle Endicott and Ebenezer Scrooge are young, bookish, hardworking Londoners drawn together by button-making. His brand-new factory threatens her family’s tiny shop, yet they fall in love and start planning their future. When personal and business calamities strike, they confront them vigorously side by side, but ultimately something has to give. We know what it is. They do not.
The Red Button Review
The Red Button by Keith Eldred is a good story that follows Ebeneezer Scrooge decades before Charles Dicken’s 1843 A Christmas Carol. This novel tells the story of Ebeneezer and Bella, and their failed romance. It is told through both perspectives and another… unique perspective.
Bella is a button maker who makes buttons in her family shop with her father. Their shop is under peril due to the industrialization and mechanization of button making. They are surviving, but not thriving. Ebeneezer after leaving his previous position with ambition for the creation of his own business approaches Bella and her father with a proposition. That is the beginning of the story. The reader then follows their romance, Ben’s dive into business, how his relationship with Marley started and what happened to his engagement.
This is a great complement for Dicken’s original novella. I would definitely read these two stories back to back before watching A Christmas Carol. I definitely thinks Keith did a great job giving an old character a new spin and backstory that can lead the reader to empathize a little more with Scrooge. Now I want to watch Christmas movies…
