The Book of Gates Synopsis

Magic. Romance. Adventure.

A world divided between hybrids and humans. Between black and white mages. What if everything weren’t so simple?

My name is JudyAnn. I am from Galenor, a world populated by humans like you and I, as well as inferniths – half human, half-demon beings such as muses, vampires and chimeras…

Upon my 19th birthday, my world was flipped upside down. I discovered I was a Gemini. Yet, I was convinced these magicians had been extinct for a long time.

A wizard was sent to fetch me at the inn where I work. He will escort me all the way to Godwynn. He is rather charming, despite his peculiar attire.

We are to depart tomorrow, and I just learned he is also a vampire and will be my magic instructor. A vampire as a bodyguard… how does that make me feel safer?

The Book of Gates Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Book of Gates is a fantasy coming of age story that throws in some paranormal romance and some mystery. The book was originally written in French (Le Livre de Portes) and is translated into English. The translation is overall well done and the small errors that there was did not distract from the storyline. The Book of Gates introduces us to the world of Galenor and to our main character JudyAnn Emmanuel.

Galenor is a world split, with inferniths (non human beings), humans, those with white magic, and those with dark magic. The tensions between the four groups is growing. Some of the inferniths and dark magicians want to take over Galenor. The humans don’t trust those with magic who see themselves are higher than them and the inferniths who following their demon side often require humans for feeding. Those with white magic are tasked with protecting the cities and those within them, they don’t trust that the allied inferniths are not double agents are will not turn on them to the other side, and anyone who uses even one dark spell is thrown into the magical prison. This leads to decisions that could throw the world into chaos.

JudyAnn is 18 years old and about to celebrate her 19th birthday. The 19th year is when magician’s powers begin to develop. She has led a sheltered life with her adoptive mother, sister and a phoenix that came to her when she was 10 years old. JudyAnn is thrown into political maneuvering, mystery and a new life in the capital when she finds out, not only does she have magic, she is also a Gemini. A pair of magical siblings whose fates are tied together and are the things of legend. How will JudyAnn cope with this new world she has found herself in? Can she have a romance with the infernith that she has fallen for? Who really is her parents? There are so many questions that are posed in this novel and I cannot wait for the next one (Le dernier Gemini, which translate to The Last Gemini) to be translated into English so I can see where JudyAnn’s story goes!

A special thank you goes out to Audrey Verreault for providing me a copy of this book for review!
